Maths Curriculum Purpose and Rationale
Curriculum Purpose: Why study Maths?
Roberts Primary Mathematics Curriculum aims to develop a rich and balanced progressive curriculum for all pupils. Our curriculum is designed to help develop confident, inquisitive learners who appreciate the beauty and power of mathematics and are able to apply their skills in a range of contexts. At Roberts Primary School we believe a high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world; ability to reason and problem solve; sense of curiosity. Mathematics is an interconnected subject. At Roberts Primary School, we teach mathematics in progressive age-related blocks as outlined by the White Rose small steps.
We intend to do this by:
- Encouraging children make connections across mathematical ideas, revisiting previously learned skills and building upon children’s prior knowledge in both a challenging and enjoyable way.
- Ensuring children are taught to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied practise so pupils develop concrete, pictorial and abstract understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge accurately.
- Encouraging mathematical vocabulary throughout mathematical blocks to ensure and build secure foundations. During lessons, there is an emphasis on sentence stems to further support children’s mathematical language and to develop their reasoning skills: presenting a mathematical justification, argument or proof.
- Ensuring children are confident mathematicians who are not afraid to take risks.
- Developing independent learners with inquisitive minds who have secure mathematical foundations and an interest in self-improvement
- Providing children with the opportunity to apply their mathematical knowledge across other curriculum areas.
The expectation is that the majority of pupils within a class will be taught broadly at the same pace, based on pupils’ secure understanding and readiness to progress towards the next step, based on good assessment for learning. Pupils’ who confidently grasp concepts will be challenged through a rich variety of reasoning and problem- solving opportunities. However, those that are not sufficiently fluent, will consolidate their understanding before moving on.

At Roberts Primary, we recognise the importance of engaging children in regular mathematical practice. Online maths games provide numerous educational benefits including; enhanced engagements, improved problem-solving skills and can help to reduce mathematical anxiety whilst allowing children to grasp and secure important mathematical concepts.
